Black Spell Ambassador Introduction Feature

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hello, I’m Matt and I’m an artist based in North Wales. I live on the side of a mountain and I’m not far from the sea. It’s nice. I work on websites for a living, and produce home made, hand-made art on a regular basis. It makes me feel good.

How would you describe your style/attitude?

Scruffy. Silly. Neon. Hairy.

How do you start your day?

I’d like to say with 30 minutes of yoga and a kale smoothie, but it’s more like buckets of tea and fried eggs. I’ve worked from home for 15 years or more, so I trot off down the bottom of the garden to the Rap Shed and start work.

How do you end your day?

Ideally with a blazing fire outside and a beer.

What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?

Riding bikes really fast down mountains. Drawing, cutting lino and printing art. Skating by the sea, running or thrashing a BMX around a pump track. Anything that gets me outside is the dream.

Who (or what) influences you?

Hiphop, rock and other funky music. Psychedelic art, hand drawn art, graffiti, painting. People who like to get up and go at something with a passion. My wife and children are pretty influential and encouraging too.

What makes you tick/what drives you?

If I can end the day with something I’ve created, or I’ve moved along in the creative process, then I’m happy. I like to carve lino cuts, or screen print posters, or paint skateboards and driftwood, or create collages that turn into drawings that later turn into paintings. I like to be free to make something and watch it grow and expand.

What is it that attracted you to Black Spell?

Witchcraft and magic and good quality clothing. You can tell there’s real care and attention put into those clothes.

What is your favourite Black Spell design or product?

The script heritage cap because I’m all about brown corduroy. I love the illustrations on the Purple Haze, Goat Witch and Space Witch t-shirts especially.

What thing at the moment are you trying to make a habit?

Just making time to be creative. Whether that’s drawing or printing, I’ve got into a pretty good regular habit of chipping away at weekly art projects and I feel like I’m accomplishing something. I want to keep doing that.

And to keep moving, to keep active somehow every day. Got to keep that ticker pumping.

What’s one thing you’re learning now? And why is it important?

I’m learning screen printing. Or more accurately, I’m learning to be neater, cleaner and more patient with my screen printed art. I’m also concentrating on freehand drawing and generally being less messy with my art. I’m striving to be better, more creative, less reliant on others and supporting others with similar goals.
