Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m Beccy from Sunderland, UK. I’m a singer/songwriter who is learning to surf/skate. I also mentor young people on songwriting through We Make Culture’s ‘Young Musician’s Project’

How would you describe your style/attitude?

I try my best to have a positive outlook and always like to challenge myself! My style is jeans and a tee shirt paired with Converse or Vans (jumpers at the minute too because I need to be cosy from November ‘til March!)

What three words would your friends use to describe you?

Calming, creative and supportive

How do you start your day?

Usually with a coffee and a shower. I’ve really gotten into skincare recently so cleansing my face has become a morning ritual.

How do you end your day?

Watching a series on Netflix, cleansing my face (again) and preparing my backpack for the next day.

What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?

On Saturdays you can find me mentoring young people writing songs in Sunderland. We’ve had to switch to Zoom sessions this year, but actually, the young people have been prolific and I’m ridiculously proud of them for continuing to create during such difficult times. My free time is usually spent playing guitar, songwriting and improving my surfing and skating. I also really love cooking. I’m veggie and love taking meaty recipes and making them meat free and super tasty… I’m awful at baking though!

Who (or what) influences you?

I’m almost 30 and I’m finding the things that influence me have changed a lot! When I was younger, social media and trends used to influence me, but now I’m influenced by my surroundings, friends and family. They are the most important things to me and I love how those things can influence my own personal growth.

What makes you tick/what drives you?

This year has been a testing one for everyone and the things that have got me through are:

Music – Performing and writing music is something I’ve done ever since I can remember and I have been playing under the name This Little Bird for… my goodness… 11 years now. I recorded an e.p. back in March and I will be focusing on releasing this material in the new year when I will hopefully have a bit more free time!

Surfing – I’ve been learning for about 18 months now and I was absolutely petrified of waves to start of with. I find that I get into a meditative state when I’m in the water and it’s a good place to forget my worries and anxieties.

Skating – I skated as a teen , but pretty much rolled around to try and look cool. I took I back up aged 28 and I’m loving it! I’m ALMOST dropping in On my own and it feels like such a great achievement

Young Musicians Project (@wemakeculture) – working with young people on something I’m super passionate – songwriting- is such a blessing and it doesn’t feel like work at all. I started playing music by going to a youth project and it’s come full circle and I’m now the mentor! Having toured the UK, Germany and Sweden playing music, it’s such a great opportunity to share my experiences with the young people and help get them started on their own musical journey. They are all so inspiring and seeing them grow in confidence and ability is just ridiculously special.

What is it that attracted you to Black Spell?

I’ve always been really intrigued by paganism and folklore imagery and love wearing tees and Blackspell is the perfect combo of the two! I was also drawn to the fact it’s not just another streetwear brand but the creators behind Blackspell are really passionate about boardsports and have a strong female representation on their social media.

What is your favourite Black Spell design or product?

I have quite a lot… but at the minute, I must say my Black Spell Tote is my favourite, the design is awesome. I can take it out to use as a shopping bag and it’s also been made to raise money for a great cause @lightsforlily. It’s a great product to help promote the brand as an ambassador. During the winter i’m going to be covering my t-shirts with coats, scarves and jumpers (and all the warm things!) so it’s a great item to still show my support when covered in toasty layers.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

I proper love pop music. Is it a guilty pleasure? Probably not as I’m pretty open about how much I love it haha! The guilty pleasure part is probably that I love to dance around the house to pop music when I’m on my own. If I’m feeling a bit low on energy or a bit down, I’ll put some Lady Gaga or Sigrid on and dance the sad away! Trust me it works!

Which one item can you not leave the house without?

Keys! I have so many keys, I don’t even know where they all came from.

Name an irrational fear (if any!)

Wooden utensils, in particular chip shop wooden forks. Just the thought of them makes me cringe.

What’s one thing you are trying to make a habit of at the moment?

Flossing and brushing my teeth before bed. I got wrong off my dentist friend at my last appointment!

What’s one thing you’re learning now? And why is it important?

I’m teaching myself how I can be more environmentally conscious and in the last couples of years have become veggie, use cruelty free cosmetics, zero waste shampoo/conditioner and being more mindful with recycling. My focus right now is fast fashion and only buying clothes that are either from small businesses, ecoconscious or second hand. The last thing I bought was a Blackspell hoody (which is super cosy by the way) and I wear it all the time.

What was the last thing you saw which made you smile?

One of the young people I work with (Paige, I’m sure she won’t mind me using her name!) Shared a video of her covering The Pogue’s – Fairytale of New York and it’s awesome! It made me smile because her journey has been so special to watch over the last two years of working with her. She’s one to watch out for!
